我叫戴阳天可能有些朋友不知道我是谁？其实我不是个金融工作者，我的职业是"艺人"，可能你们很奇怪我作为"艺人"为什么要办一个关于金融的 blog因为最近我看到很多人因为收入的问题，生活变得很可怜，所以我想把我的观念和大家分享。
I'm Dai Yang Tian, may be some friends may not know me. I'm not from the financial sector. I'm an actor. May be you are curious why an actor wants to start a financial blog. It's because I recently saw some people with financial difficulties and I found them pitiful. Thus, I wish to share my views with all of you.

我会在这个blog 上和大家说说我对"钱"的观念和自己的一些投资心得我也很希望大家都能在这个blog上说说你们的想法，这个不仅是"戴阳天"个人的blog他只是个比较能够吸引人去关注的名字，这个blog是属于所有有着共同想法的人。我希望看完我文章的人可以把这个大家的 blog告诉给你们的朋友，你们看完后觉得有共鸣也好觉得没什么也好甚至觉得我是个傻瓜也好，对我来说十个人看有一个人觉得有用就足够了。因为我碰到的问题可能是将来你们也会碰到的问题。

I would like to share with all of you my view about money and some investment ideas. I hope all of you would also give your opinion and share your views on this blog. This isn't my personal blog but it's just because 'Dai Yang Tian' is a more 'prominent' name. This blog belongs to everyone who shares the same view as me. 我朋友的公司关了！

最近和一个朋友见面问问他最近的情况，他告诉我他的公司关了，

我很意外，因为一直以来他的公司的业绩情况都不错那我就猜是不是因为最近金融风暴的结果但是他说其实不是，是因为他的“理财”不当。他的公司一整年的业绩情况还是不错但是因为“一次股票投资”失手导致整盘皆输。那时中国股票从8000点掉到6000点的时候大家都说，掉到“底”拉大家快买吧，他也认为这是个机会动用公司80%的流动资金进场但没想到又从6000点到4000点再到998多在加上经济和流动资金的问题公司直接关门。其实这种事情在我们的生活中太多了只是有些是企业有些是个人。所以我希望大家再没有真正的了解这个你们要投资的行当之前不要盲目进场，就是我说的我可以失败但是我要知道为什么失败。
PS：下次和大家谈谈关于我学习的一些办法，希望大家也能和我谈谈你们理财的办法和自己碰到过的成功或失败的事让我长长见识。看到有为朋友留言她是买彩票的那我是不鼓励的呵呵！！！！！

Recently, I met up with my friend. I asked about his situation and he told me he has wound up his company.

I was very surprised as I had always thought his company's performance was not bad. I guessed it could be due to the recent financial crisis. He said that was not the problem, it was his inability to manage his finances. His company had been performing well until one particular stock investment that wiped out the company's finances. During that time, the China Stock index has pared from 8000 to 6000, everyone thought it has dropped till rock bottom and most people were asked to enter the market then. At that juncture, he also thought it was an opportunity not to be missed & entered the market with 80% of liquid funds. Who knew that index suffered another southward dive from 6000 to 4000, then to 998. The company went into financial difficulties and thus had to be closed down. Such encounters happened all around us, sometimes to companies while other times to individuals. Therefore, if one does not know it well, it is better not to enter the market blindly. This is what I always say, I can fail but I need to know the reason why I fail.

P/S : I'll share with all of you my learning methods. I hope all of you will also share with me your methods in managing your wealth, your success and failure stories so that I can learn from there too. I read a friend's message on buying lottery ticket and this is something I don't encourage.

欧萱兴奋地说，自己接到通知时，立刻就答应，毫无顾虑，因为这是她梦寐以求的角色，很高兴公司终于给她机会尝试，档期也配合得到。

她说："第一次演大反派，角色也有很多内心挣扎，对我来说是个大挑战。之前剧组的人也跟我说，是时候我该尝试不同的角色，我完全同意！我觉得，是时候给自己一个挑战，考验自己的演技，推自己到极限。"

最近在做一个慈善，给我的触动很深，我看到大概有七百个老人每天都要接受慈善机构的援助才能生活，我们作为艺人的为大家组织捐款当然义不容辞，但是我在想现在的年轻人都不喜欢要孩子到我们这代真的还有呢么多年青人愿意为我们捐款吗？到时老人的数量越来越多真的还有呢么多经费吗？所以这几天就和一些朋友讨论做了个关于金融的网站希望大家都可以上来看看。说句实话我是个很幸运的人很多新加坡的投资高手都帮我上过课让我少走了一些弯路，我很愿意把它分享给大家。我希望看到我这篇blog的朋友都来帮忙如果是英语高手的也麻烦帮我翻译成英语。我真心的希望大家可以向我一样少走点弯路。

大家有没有这个想法，我很想赚钱但不知道怎样才能除了打工以外的赚钱，我以前就碰到过这样的问题。我很幸运，我的演艺事业从一开始就一帆风顺可能就是因为这个原因很多人都很愿意和我说话，我去外面上一些投资的课程(我会在以后和大家分享)，那些真正的投资者都亲自给我上课他们告诉我很多他们走过的弯路让我省了很多的时间。那段期间我有了一些成绩可是我那时觉得有钱自己赚就好了也不想告诉他人也怕媒体说我是炒作，直到最近才改变了我的想法。我们已经面临史无前例的经济危机希望大家都要仔细的想想该怎么办是不是该从事一个副业。

Recently, something happened that led me to doing this financial blog, hope those who have the same thinking as myself would strike a chord with me. All of you can give me your opinion/suggestion as to how we can help more people. Why do I say this? Many of us do not know we are about to face one of the most dangerous economic crisis in history. The aging population throughout the world, the rising inflation. Our salary increment can never match up with inflation. Property prices rise swiftly too. May be some people will suggest we take on a few jobs but I feel that is a vicious cycle. Your boss will give you more work when you are more efficient, thus resulting in the reduction of private time, family time and thinking/reflection time. Why the rich becomes richer and richer while the poor becomes poorer and poorer? The poor work because of money, the rich will not work for money but money work for them. This is why I start this blog to discuss "investment" with all of you.

Do all of you have this thought? I like to earn money but I do not know how to earn money apart from working. I encountered this problem in the past. I am very lucky that my acting career has been smooth-sailing. Due to this reason, many people are very willing to speak with me. When I took up some investment courses (I'll share more in future), these real investors taught me personally & shared with me their mistakes which in turn saved me a lot of time. I made some profits during that period & I thought I'd just keep all this to myself and not tell others as I was afraid that it'd become a media hype. It was only recently that I changed my thinking. We are about to face an economic crisis that is without precedent. Hope everyone would think carefully, whether we should have a sideline or not.

SINGAPORE: Television host Pornsak put Singapore actors Elvin Ng and Dai Yang Tian on the spot during the press conference for their new drama serial "No Limits" on Tuesday.

He slipped in references to Ng and Dai's alleged 'princely' rivalry at every opportunity before asking the classic question once posed to Caldecott queens Zoe Tay and Fann Wong.

"Are you friends or just colleagues?" asked Pornsak.

To which Dai replied: "We are definitely friends!"

I am inclined to believe him. He and Ng looked comfortable with one another and even joked around a little during the event.

When I spoke to Dai, he seemed to see himself as his own greatest rival and was more interested in the quality of his own performance than in comparing it to the performances of others.

Dai, who plays a gifted cellist in "No Limits" which premieres July 7 on Channel 8, said he learned to play the cello specifically for this role and picked up the basics in six lessons with a cello instructor.

While his instructor praised him for being a natural and admired his ability to learn so much so quickly, the actor said it was simply "necessary" and revealed that he was actually worried he would make technical mistakes due to the rushed training and end up looking unconvincing.

"I haven't spotted any mistakes in the trailer so far, and I hope the show turns out well, but I will definitely pay attention when the show airs. Most viewers probably won't notice the errors but I will," said Dai, ever the perfectionist.

"Playing the cello is the hardest thing I had to do in the show!" he declared.

"You have to play the cello and act at the same time. You even have to pay attention to the proper finger technique and rhythm. All these combined, it is very difficult.

"If you want me to just act, I have no problem. If you want me to play the cello, I'm also okay. But if I have to do all these things together, it can be a little too much to process."

Music Out, Action In

Although he had managed to pick up the cello in a short time, Dai said he wasn't about to pick up the guitar, start a band and cut an album.

"I think I do have a little musical talent. Music has always been one of my loves. I have also been taking singing lessons.

"But I won't be forming a band. You need to be a professional to cut an album. It's probably still okay if I do it as a hobby. Honestly, I know the limits of my abilities. I don't think I am really musician material," he said.

"I want to just focus on acting for now."

True to his word, Dai is already preparing for his next role, as part of an evil pair of siblings with Jeanette Aw in the year-end blockbuster "Breakout" which shoots in August.

Dai and Aw have been playing the hero and heroine roles for some time now, so it may well be their big chance to avoid being typecasted.

Dai and Aw's villainous characters will be thinking up ways to make life difficult for Ng, who will play the good guy, a super-smart detective with some rather eccentric habits (think L from "Death Note").

"Breakout" will also be Dai's first action-heavy project and he is doing his homework to make sure he turns in a good performance.

"I have already read the entire script because this next show is slightly different. It has more action sequences so I hope to study it a little more.

"Between now and August, I'll also be going back to China to refine my performance skills and when I return, it's straight to doing styling for the new show," revealed the industrious actor.

"No Limits" debuts on July 7 and airs every weeknight at 9pm on Channel 8.

小戴说，他其实早在16岁来新之前就开始进场投资，而且至今未曾烧过手。“那时候我只是自己闷赚，心想为何要让别人有好处。上课之后，那些大老板都很愿意亲自教导人们赚钱的方式。我一个好朋友就说，为什么中国人要自相残杀，然后给人家差的东西？我就觉得为何不结集力量，有钱大家一起赚，因此后来投资观念也有所改变。”

小戴接下来会在年底大制作《破天网》中与欧萱饰演奸诈兄妹，两人从《小》的情深意切到《破》的狼狈为奸，小戴对这个角色已经迫不及待。

小戴说：“我已经把剧本看了一遍，太爱这个角色了！其实间中一直有海外如中、港、台的经纪公司敲门，他们知道我接下这个奸角，就电邮提醒我这么快演奸人，对我的白马王子偶像形象会有一定影响，可是偶像不能当一辈子，我希望在演技方面能返朴归真，希望能借这个机会将自己带到另一层面，而不是被某种形态驾驭。”

陈靓瑄新戏扮泳手　惋惜两帅哥未秀身材

6月底约满新传媒的花旦陈靓瑄，已经被本地一所大学录取，8月正式报到，攻读为期三年的商业行政系。

陈靓瑄昨天出席在新传媒的最后一部电视剧《泳闯琴关》记者会，接受访问时，要求记者为她就读哪所大学保密，因为她希望开学初期，保持低调，等她感觉比较舒服后，或许才公开学校名称。

之前传中国女富豪韩媛媛有意设立经纪公司，安排本地艺人到中国发展，陈靓瑄是被她看好的其中一名艺人。对此，陈靓瑄说：“听到传言我是一头雾水，因为我从颜天发（明星发型师）那里知道这个人，但并不认识她，也没谈过那些事。”

潘玲玲透露陈天文在剧中有一场惊人头下脚上的演出——水中芭蕾，令人意想不到。陈天文说，几年前他曾在一场电视慈善义演中表演同一个项目，就是那时学到的技术。

袁帅在本剧也有突破，原来他演面善心恶的反派，和戴阳天抢林慧玲，还和后者有吻戏和床戏，同时交出了荧幕初吻和床戏的第一次。林慧玲笑冒冷汗的他：“别看他酷酷的，演亲热戏特别害羞。”

戴阳天为新戏苦学大拉琴，他自嘲拉琴声音难听如砍树！他也透露，最近有意炒楼，新加坡、中国和日本的房产都在研究。

在新传媒8频道新戏《泳闯琴关》中，戴阳天饰演大提琴手王宇乐，他性格比较闷、不爱说话，起初家庭美满，但之后父亲过世，女友也移情别恋，所幸遇到了乐观的游泳儿（陈靓瑄饰）。

戴阳天小时候是管乐队成员，对弦类乐器不太熟悉，这次为了角色，特地上了约8堂课，学习拉琴的姿势和指法。

老师夸阳阳有拉琴天分

日前，戴阳天接受xinmsn专访时直言，大提琴应该是所有乐器中最难的，自己练习的时间也不够。

他说，专业的乐手一天通常练习6小时，但自己连正确的姿势都不懂，所以老师不建议他拉那么久。

不过，虽然每堂课才两小时，但已经令戴阳天觉得很恐怖。他说："因为全神贯注去练习，太多技术要掌握，所以每次都很累。"因为必须维持姿势，他也得忍受肌肉的酸痛。

虽然大提琴老师对戴阳天赞赏有嘉，夸他是这方面的天才，但戴阳天自嘲："我拉琴的声音实在太难听了，真的像砍树一样，所有人都受不了！在拍摄后面的阶段，因为我要跟着音乐拉，导演都会在我的琴上粘胶布。"

就算是把琴带回家练，为了不要吵到邻居，戴阳天也会骑着脚车到附近的山坡上去练习。

戴阳天带着歉意说，有些拉琴的特写镜头，必须借助于替身，但替身并不知道角色的心情，所以他对他们会有些要求，导致口气可能不是很好。

意外陈靓瑄要暂休阳阳：她长大了

《泳闯琴关》是陈靓瑄离开新传媒去求学前的最后一部戏，戴阳天与她在戏中有感情戏。

对于好友的决定，戴阳天说："其实，我觉得她长大了。她是我来之后认识的第一位朋友，在我的印象里，她没有这样的一种想法，这是让我很意外的。"

他表示，身为一个朋友，他不会去考虑陈靓瑄的决定是对还是错。他认为，有想法就是正确的，所以会支持她。

最近，戴阳天也与陈靓瑄聊到各自的未来计划："她的想法是蛮鲜明的，而且知道自己要些什么，我蛮为她开心，我也相信她只是暂别。"

戴阳天透露，自己在拍完《泳闯琴关》后，7月份会回中国上两个星期的表演课，已经找了老师来进行一对一教学，8月才回来开拍《破天网》。

记者问他是否受到陈靓瑄的影响，戴阳天解释，自己一向来都有这个想法，只是一直没有时间配合。

戴阳天也会乘机在中国办妥手续，好让成为新加坡永久居民的申请能尽快被批准。

代言多赚够本炒楼兴致勃勃

戴阳天是代言新天王，目前手上有5个代言，日前有报道指出，他觉得现在合租房子不划算，想要买房子。

记者向戴阳天求证，他即刻否认，表示并没有要搬家，和房东处得很好。不过，他倒是透露，自己对投资房产和股票非常有兴趣。

"房产是我在来新加坡以前就很关心的，我对金融方面一直很感兴趣，到每个城市，都会去多留意他们的房产和股票。"

他表示，自己来新以后，即开了股票户口，也会常上一些金融方面的课程。

那想要投资本地房产吗？戴阳天笑说："其实，最近吸引我的地方很多，所以我一直很矛盾。新加坡的地产都很稳定增长，中国的2、3线城市也上得很快，价位比较便宜。"

他继续滔滔不绝，表示真正要投资的人，对房子的要求非常高，要找到一间好房子，真的不是一件容易的事。

"如果有机会的话，当放假也好，当市场调查也好，我希望能到中国二、三线城市去看一看。也有朋友说，东京最近的房价掉得很厉害，所以很多地方都很有吸引力，一直在考虑之中。"

不过，戴阳天坦言目前资本不够，还没有经济能力去买本地房产，需要一定的机会去累积储蓄。

现在是他的参考阶段，会努力去学习各种相关知识。或许，戴阳天会因此想再接再厉接代言，往买楼目标迈进吧！

《泳闯琴关》将从7月7日起，每逢星期一至五晚上9时，通过8频道播出。

Dishy Dai Yang Tian has been turning his cast-mates off. With his cello-playing, that is.

In the upcoming MediaCorp Channel 8 drama No Limits, Yang Tian plays the reclusive cellist Wang Yu Le, whose world comes crashing down when his father dies and his girlfriend leaves him for someone else.

In order to portray the role of a cellist convincingly, Yang Tian took up lessons to learn the fundamentals of playing the cello.

Despite praises from the cello coach, Yang Tian humbly jokes that he plays the cello like sawing a tree.

"The sound is really horrible when I play; it really sounds like I'm sawing a tree and everyone on set could hardly stand it. The director had to tape up the strings to muffle the sound whenever I play it."

Whenever he has a chance to bring the cello back home, Yang Tian would ride a bicycle up to a nearby hill to spare his neighbours an ear-splitting time.

While an experienced player spends at least six hours practicing daily, Yang Tian, an amateur is restricted to only two hours per session.

"Because you need to have full concentration in practicing and learning all that techniques, I end up exhausted after each session."

He also had to put up with aching muscles as he has to maintain an upright posture throughout the practice session.

In No Limits, Yang Tian stars opposite Felicia Chin who plays the optimistic You Yong Xin.

Felicia makes her swansong before leaving MediaCorp to further her studies. Yang Tian revealed he was initially taken aback by his good friend's sudden decision.

"I never knew she had the thought of furthering her studies, but I guess she's matured in her thinking."

"She knows what she wants and I'm really happy for her; but I am also sure that she would not be gone from the screen for long."

Having talked to Felicia, Yang Tian reveals that he has some plans of his own.

When filming for No Limits wraps up, he will head back to China for a two-week-long performing lesson.

He added that he will settle the paperwork for his citizenship before heading back to shoot the year-end blockbuster drama Breakout.

With five endorsement deals on hand, there is no doubt that money is rolling in for him.

When asked, Yang Tian denies the rumours that he is moving out of his rented room to buy his own pad, but revealed that he does have an interest in the stock and property market.

Besides keeping up to date with the news, he is also taking finance-related courses to gain a better understanding of investments. So would he take the step from understanding to actually dabbling in it?

Yang Tian explains that while he is genuinely interested, he lacks the capital to actually invest in it. Moreover, he is in a dilemma as both local properties and those in China have attractive prices, and for him, he has very high expectations on the type of house he's getting.

"If there's a chance I'll definitely want to go back to China to take a look at local properties."

As for now, fans will rest well knowing that they'll definitely get to see more of Yang Tian as he continues to save up for his dream house.

终于到了最后的冲刺了，还有15天就要杀青了，整个剧组也可能到了极限了，很多人生病的生病，不舒服的不舒服，大家放心我还挺得住。只是前天不知道怎么了手机掉了，所有朋友的电话都没了，好麻烦！！！！！破钱消灾吧。我答应你们的事都记得，等戏拍完就来找你们吃饭，拍视屏。

我在贴吧问候的“你们”当然包括“前人”，我每次叫的袋鼠都是个统称。我从来没有忘记过你们。这两年一直在新加坡我真的没办法面面俱到，我也知道等待很辛苦，你们说的对这两年是有很多“前人”离家出走了，但是只要他们想回来我都还是很欢迎。其实你们只要闲着无聊的时候来看看我我就心满意足了。对我来说根本没有什么“前人”“后人”你们都是我的袋鼠。

Finally, I've reached the last sprint, there are 15 more days to the end of filming. The entire cast/crew have reached their limit. Many fell ill. Don't worry, I can still withstand all these.

I lost my handphone 2 days ago, all my friends' telephone numbers were gone, very troublesome!

I remember what I promised all of you: I'll take a meal with all of you and take the video.

When I say hello to all of you at tieba, that include the "oldies". When I call Kangaroos, I mean it's an address to all of you. I've never forgotten all of you. I can't accomplish everything under the sun while I have been in Singapore for the past 2years. I know "waiting" is tiring. Many of you said these 2 yrs, many "oldies" have left, but I'd welcome them back if they want to return. I'm contended if all of you can come and see me during your leisure. To me, there are no "oldies" & "newbies", you are all my Kangaroos.

I had contacted Kim, our Phuket trip tour guide, about 3 weeks ago and asked her if she had read our Kangaroos’ Phuket trip travel logs. She replied that she had read it already and complimented us on our bilingualism. Afterwards, she said that she would like to contribute a travel log too, however as she had to lead a tour group and because she does not usually type in mandarin, she would require more time. As Kim tends to joke a lot, I had initially assumed that she was joking about this too. I did not expect that she was for real, until I got her email at 5am this morning. I have edited several words, but please forgive me if there are any mistakes.

When my friends heard that I was leading a celebrity tour group to Phuket, everyone asked me one question “Do you know who is Dai Yang Tian?”. I replied that “I don’t know”. This is because I don’t watch TV shows nor listen to the radio, I only watch the News on TV. For the sake of leading this group, I went online to research on him and to see his photo, so that I would at least recognise him when I reach the airport.

I wanted to go home the moment I first laid my eyes on him: why is he so tall! Is the air up there fresher? I took a closer look at his face: why is his face so smooth and unblemished, unlike mine? I mentally scored him 30 points (I don't like beautiful guys!!) However I added 10 points once he started speaking to me: very polite, speaks with substance, quite a nice young man. Once we arrived at Phuket and whilst we were playing games, I immediately increased the score to 60 points!

I believe that I am the only one who saw this, as all the Kangaroos eyes were on him. We were in the pool and some Kangaroos had difficulty climbing out. Yang Tian behaved very gentlemanly, ensuring that everyone went up first. When the very last person still had difficulty climbing up, he helped by letting her step on his hands in order to boost her up. He was also a good spot and is very quick-witted. Subsequently, he realised that i was tired that afternoon and told me to go back to the room to rest. That night we went shopping as Yang Tian wanted to buy some souvenirs for the Kangaroos. We walked for over 3 hours and I swear never to walk with him again: I had to run to keep up with him for every step that he took!!! !!!(*&^%$#$%^&*(*&

On the second day, after having a chat with the group, I realised that Yang Tian is a very typical Chinese man, he is the type who believes that the man goes out to work whilst his wife stays at home. I also find him rather pessimistic, he is very quiet sometimes, but yet humourous at other times. I feel that he is a boy and a man gelled into one: very direct, very honest, and very real.

Towards the end of the trip, I saw for myself Yang Tian's professionalism: He stood for 20 minutes under a 38-degrees scorching hot sun without any complaints, just to take photos with everyone. That was really very admirable. To me, Yang Tian is a person who keeps his promises.

To all readers, this is the first time that I have typed in Chinese. Please forgive me if there are any errors.

Lastly, I want to tell Yang Tian "You are a very lucky guy with many wonderful qualities, to top it off, you are also very diligent. I wish you all the best!"

大概3星期前，跟金联络，问她是否读了袋鼠们普吉岛的旅游手记。她说有啊，而且还称赞袋鼠们都精通双语。然后，她说她也想投稿，由于她必须带团到国外，而且也因为她从不需用汉字打文件/信件，我必须多给她一点时间。起初以她搞笑开朗的性格，我以为她是闹着玩的，怎么晓得她是来真的。今天凌晨5点，收到她的稿后，我已帮她改了些句子/汉字。如果还有不佳之处，请见谅。

如有朝一日，金成为Dai Yang Tian Singapore Fanclub 会员，那就证明了阳天的号召力有多强。他能使许多人做一些以前根本都不做的事，来支持他。

我的朋友听到我要带一团到普及岛时，每个人第一道问题是“你知道戴阳天是谁吗?"。我回答"不知道"。因为我不看电视节目,不听广播电台, 只看新闻报道。为了带这团，我上网看他的照片，怕到了机场不认得他。

第一眼看到他,我很想回家,没事长那么高（闽南语。中文是为什么长得那么高）, 上面空气比较清新吗? 再看他的脸, 哎，为何他是白璧无瑕而我却是九筒? 我给他打了30 分。( 我不爱美男子!!)可当他说了第一句话时，我自动加了10 分。有礼貌, 说话有内涵, 是位很不错的年轻人。可到了当地, 在玩游戏后, 立刻加分到60分!

这件事只有我看到,因为所有的戴鼠都在看他。话说当时, 在泳池的一些戴鼠门爬不上岸, 阳阳却不象一般男子想办法吃豆腐, 直到最后一位戴鼠真的爬不上边, 他才用手扶助戴鼠的脚丫子。很有风度.。他玩得起, 脑筋动得很快。他知道我累了, 叫我先回房休息，晚上我才领教他的脚力。为了让戴鼠们开心, 我们走了最少3个小时的路买纪念品给戴鼠, 我发誓从此以后不跟他走路, 他走一步, 我得跑步!!!(*&^%$#$%^&*(*&

第二天,跟大家谈了天,感觉到他是一个典型的中国男儿,男主外女主内,不过有点悲观主义。有时很静，有时很搞笑, 感觉是男孩和男人的混合体。很直, 很正, 很真。

到后来, 我才服了他的敬业精神, 在温度38的太阳下站了20分钟，没有怨言让戴鼠们拍照, 那才了不起。最后要说的是，对我而言，他是一位言而有信之人。

Youth Olympics Games (YOG)

I'm elated to be able to participate in an international event such as 'YOG'. I'm very surprised that I have been invited to attend. I'm happy to be able to make some contribution to my second homeland, Singapore. I'm even happier to see all of my adorable 'Kangaroos' (fans). In fact, I saw all of you before my appearance on stage, I waved at you but you didn't notice. I couldn't come out earlier due to the tight security as PM Mr Lee Hsien Loong was at the event.

Dai Yangtian habitually wears such a brooding demeanour that you expect him to growl on approach. He also habitually wears a baseball cap that obscures half his face, and from beneath it a thick sheaf of hair, a force of nature hell-bent on springing free, hides in its shadow, his large eyes are wary, mocking and coldly observant.

“I realise Singaporeans greet almost everyone they meet with a ‘how do you do’ or ‘have you eaten’ and I don’t understand this, says Dai. “I’m not used to it and it just feels artificial to me. It’s strange to ask someone ‘how are you?’ and not even be prepared to wait for the answer and just walk away. I know that is just the manners around here but I don’t agree with it; I won’t adopt it.”

So when exactly is a good time to ask ‘How are you’?
“When I know you well enough, I’ll sit down with you and have a conversation and really get to know you. Until that time, I’ll just give a nod and go my way,” Dai confesses, unapologetic about seeming aloof or proud, and not making polite conversation.

Because he’s made such a splash, one quickly forgets that he’s only been working in Singapore for less than two years. Following his debut in Taste of Love, he shot to household fame and sealed his hearthrob status in The Little Nyonya.

It’s no surprise that he wouldn’t be mistaken for a Singaporean. Like the obscuring cap, he wears a pall of otherness. For one, although he is learning Singlish quickly (one suspects that Dai has the mainlander’s mercurial adaptability), he speaks in booming, crisp, perfect Mandarin. This is charming, but also intimidating, and speaking to him is not unlike being browbeaten by the president of a debating team making an eloquent, winning argument.

“I’m not romantic. I’m not the knight in shining armour on a white horse. I’m more the dark knight, really.”

Unlike Elvin Ng, there’s something menacing and predatory about Dai and therein lies his appeal – he’s a Heathcliff type. And he’s like Zoe Tay: There’s something of the forest and the barn about Dai — a whiff of nature. Beneath the glittering trappings, the cap, the trendy pink plaid shirt, the hip hop jeans and sneakers, his legs are heavy and hirsute, his feet large. His big hands, often abusing the console of computer games, can just as easily knock you out senseless and drag you into his cave. And which girl can resist that? Combine this atavistic charm with Dai’s bursts of eloquence in that low growl, and he’s a spellbinding package.

Dai has something else in common with Zoe: In his answers during interviews, the wheat and the chaff are indistinguishable, and what is offered as revelations is often transcribed as an opaque mass. With the more transparent Ng, the wheat and chaff, though profuse and mixed in equal parts, are easily separated. (Fann, of course, offers unadulterated chaff.) As if to preserve his mystique, Dai may wax eloquent when he gets into the mood, but he’s never revealing or personal, and ultimately inscrutable. He firmly declines to discuss his estranged parents. (But he’’ll say: His mother runs a food business in Shanghai and Tokyo.) And although he professes to like Singapore enough to want to make it his second home, one senses unspoken motivations.

He wants to settle down here, the food, the cleanliness the organised, nice people. Ah... but there's something else, something unsaid.

Lucky black roses and battle suits - this year's Star Wars were fought well

As the stars pulled up in chauffeured Mercedes vehicles and worked the red carpet in front of screaming fans on Sunday evening, the annual Star Awards really felt like the event of the year.

Held for the first time at Resorts World Sentosa, the annual Star Awards have never been this all-out, blinged-up glamorous. The grand Compass Ballroom at the Resorts World Convention Centre was soon resonating with triumphs and designer gowns as awards season came to a glittering finale.

He rose to the occasion

As expected, nostalgia drama Together was awarded Best Drama Serial. But the real drama was centered around Chen Hanwei and the mysterious case of the black rose (part 2).

Hanwei picked up his fourth Best Actor award for Daddy At Home and jokingly credited it to the "lucky" black rose he always wears to the Star Awards. "Last year's rose disintegrated into pieces because the others were all snatching at it," he said. "I made this year's rose myself - I bought the black plastic rose and glued a pin onto the back!"

It's become a running joke that he wins an award every time he wears the rose. Hanwei would like to put an end to all that nonsense and give credit to the real reason for his success - himself.

"You really think it's got divine powers, meh? If that were the case, I wouldn't have to work. I'd just wear it every day, from the first of January to the 31st of December," he said. "It's still my own hard work that got me the award! No matter what role falls to me, I like to be creative. I won't just read from the script - I create a character. That's a habit of mine."

In contrast, Best Actress Chen Liping, who won for her Reunion Dinner performance, was calm, cool, and collected, despite beating out hot favourites Jeanette Aw and Ann Kok. Reunion Dinner also took the Highest-Rated Drama Serial award. But Liping assured us, "Of course I'm very happy. Every role takes effort and hard work. My current goal is to perform well in the drama I'm currently filming. It's a new challenge."

No celebrating for Liping - filming would begin bright and early the next morning.

'Senior citizens' make way for the kids

Winning the All-Time Favourite Artiste awards, after having won the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste Award 10 times, were Mark Lee and Christopher Lee. "I'm happy because I no longer have to sit there wondering if my face will appear. I'm also a little bummed because it feels a bit like getting senior citizenship - like I should get a discount when I take the MRT," said Mark, laughing.

"But I'm happy that there are now two more spots for newer actors to fill," added the funny man, who also won the Best Variety Show Host award for his work on It's A Small World.

Agreed Chris: "If you keep winning Top 10 Most Popular, people will be wondering when you'll ever give the newcomers a chance. We need new blood so that there won't be a gap in this profession."

"I'm so happy for him," said Chris's adoring wife Fann. "He's been in this line for so long. It was really heartbreaking to see him stressing over the Top 10 every year. This year marks a nice conclusion and the starting point for higher development."

"I no longer have to be anxious for him every year!" she laughed.

Feeling the love ... at long last

Winning the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as a grandfather suffering from dementia in Reunion Dinner was the venerable Zhu Hou Ren - his very first award in his 16 years in the business. Getting a little emotional, he explained the story of what he calls his "battle suit".

"I've been wearing the same suit to the awards since 2004 to remind me that I need to press on until I win an award," he said of the suit his wife bought him. "Next year I'll wear a different suit."

Best Supporting Actress Constance Song, who won for her villainous turn in The Ultimatum, also felt that her award had been a long time coming. "I had been thinking, 'If the directors think so highly of me, why haven't I won an award yet?'" she said.

"I'd been feeling down in my career and in my life for the past two years. I felt like I'd lost the spark ... Finally I have an award."

Constance added that she hoped her next step would be to play a role in which she could act silly. "I'm sure it'd be really cute!"

Perhaps the most touching moment of the evening was when a teary Bryan Wong dedicated his Best Info-Ed Programme Host award - for Food Hometown 2, where Bryan explored his ancestral hometown Hainan - to his father, who passed away 14 years ago.

"When they were about to announce the result, I really wanted it to be me because I really wanted to go on stage and dedicate the award to my father. He had always wanted me to go to back to Hainan," Bryan said. "I thank my parents - I feel I've done them proud." With additional reporting by Erika Cleo Foo and Michelle Ann Kwara
